The Association of Friends and Sponsors of the German-American Fulbright Program
In 1996 a number of Fulbright alumni established the Association of Friends and Sponsors of the German-American Fulbright Program (“Association”). According to its charter, the Association aims at both promoting academic and cultural exchange between the USA and Germany and deepening the transatlantic dialogue by awarding grants to future young leaders.
Since 2006 the Association supports the Diversity Initiative of the Fulbright Commission. Under this initiative outstanding Abiturienten (high school graduates) with an immigrant background receive grants to participate in a five-week Summer School at a U.S. university. In 2008 the Association provides funds for 15 students to attend the Summer School at California State University at East Bay where the students do not only improve their English language skills but also acquire intercultural competences and a taste of academic life in the USA.
Furthermore, the Association organises the Fulbright Career Day in Frankfurt/M. on a Friday in early November; the scheduling is linked to the annual Welcome Meeting of the Fulbright Alumni Association. On the Career Day Fulbright alumni meet representatives of various business corporations, small companies and public institutions. Lectures, workshops, information stands and one-on-one discussions offer a unique opportunity to collect information about current trends on the job market and to establish contacts with potential employers.
The funds of the Association are exclusively raised from membership fees and donations. The Fulbright Alumni Association has been a generous and steady supporter of the Association for many years. Thanks to these Fulbright Alumni donations several students could visit the USA each year since 2006.
