2016 Winter Ball

The Berlin chapter cordially invites you to the 2016 Winter Ball following the 2016 General Assembly of the German Fulbright Alumni Association.

What better day to celebrate: on January 24, 1986, the statutes of the Association were signed. Exactly 30 years later, we come together to commemorate this historic date, and to dance into the Association’s anniversary.

And what better place to celebrate: Universal Hall, a historic pumping station, is one of those typical locations in Berlin where tradition and modernity blend into a unique glamorous roughness.

We look forward to welcoming you to Berlin!

Best wishes,
Your organizing team

Due to the very high interest, the registration has been temporarily closed. Please write an e-mail to winterball2016[at]fulbright-alumni.de if you still want to participate. Depending on the current figures, this may or may not be possible.

Guided Tours (from 12.30 pm)

  1. Gedenkstätte Hohenschönhausen (Memorial Site Hohenschönhausen)
The site of the main remand prison for people detained by the former East German Ministry of State Security (MfS), or 'Stasi', has been a Memorial since 1994 and, from 2000 on, has been an independent Foundation under public law. The Memorial's charter specifically entrusts it with the task of researching the history of the Hohenschönhausen prison between 1945 and 1989, supplying information via exhibitions, events and publications, and encouraging a critical awareness of the methods and consequences of political persecution and suppression in the communist dictatorship. The former Stasi remand prison is also intended to provide insight into the workings of the GDR's political justice system. Since the vast majority of the buildings, equipment and furniture and fittings have survived intact, the Memorial provides a very authentic picture of prison conditions in the GDR. The Memorial's location in Germany's capital city makes it the key site in Germany for victims of communist tyranny. Tours of the prison are usually led by former inmates, who provide first-hand details on prison conditions and the interrogation methods employed by the GDR's Ministry of State Security (MfS).

Experience World War II bombing raids through the eyes of civilians. Everyday hundreds of people walk past a green door in the Gesundbrunnen underground railway station, unaware that within lies a subterranean labyrinth full of history just waiting to be experienced. Berlin was the nerve center of the Third Reich and therefore one of the main targets for allied bombing during WW II. On this tour expert guides will lead you in exploring one of the few remaining bunkers, as it was left after the war. There you will learn more about the life of the average Berlin citizen during the air-raids that destroyed up to 80 % of the city’s center. Travelling through the twisting passages and rooms, you will also see countless artefacts from the war that have been buried for decades. Additionally, by looking into the development of the city's subway and sewerage systems as well its former pneumatic post, we will provide you with an insight in the 160 year old underground history of Berlin.

On the other hand, Tempelhof is also a symbol of freedom, and the Air Lift of 1948/49 made the airport famous throughout the world. During the division of Germany the airport was the gateway to freedom for many people. Over the course of a roughly 2 hour walking tour, you will be taken to the most interesting parts of the huge building, which has a surface space of 300,000 square meters.
